Before the button
A business-funding form can look harmless: requested amount, revenue, time in business, phone number. The important question is not only what the form asks. It is who the form lets contact you after you submit it.
Before entering a phone number, read the text immediately above and below the submit button.
1. Look for plural parties
Words such as partners, providers, affiliates, lenders, funders, marketing partners, third parties, network or matched providers can indicate that you are authorizing contact from more than the company whose logo is on the page.
That does not automatically make the service bad. A marketplace needs to share information to shop an application. The tradeoff is that one submission may create several new commercial relationships.
2. Look for phone and text consent
Search for call, text, SMS, telephone, autodialed, automated, prerecorded and similar language. Understand whether you are consenting only to transactional updates or to broader marketing contact.
3. Ask whether the company is the lender
A direct lender, broker and marketplace are different products. Before submitting, answer one simple question: Who will actually receive my information?
If the page does not make that clear, treat the uncertainty as part of the cost of applying.
4. Find the exit before you enter
Check whether the page or privacy policy gives a clear way to revoke marketing consent, opt out of texts or request deletion. An easy-to-find control is useful information. So is the absence of one.
5. Save the consent language
Take a screenshot or copy the paragraph before submitting. Consent language changes. Keeping the version you actually saw gives you a record of what the page represented at the time.
Use FundingRank before you apply
Use the Application Privacy tool to inspect the provider’s researched application path and unresolved sharing questions. Then check the lender's FundingRank profile to see what evidence is established and what is still unknown.
The goal is not to avoid every funding company. It is to make the decision before the calls start, not after.
